Become a Centre Intern
A ‘New Zealand Centre Liaison Internship’ was established in 2009 and New Zealand students studying in Beijing are able to apply for the position.
Appointed on a semester basis, the interns tutor and support the New Zealand History and Culture undergraduate course and provide various support for the Centre’s activities, such as the coordination and hosting of the Visiting Fellows and preparing material for the NZC website.
Application rounds are posted twice yearly through the NZC Advisory Board contacts at all NZ universities.
My time at Peking University was profound. Being immersed in another culture allowed me to not only experience and appreciate the Chinese worldview, but also provided a reflective surface to understand my own worldview as well. It was a paradigm shift. Of course, simply being in another country was not enough for this, the other piece of the puzzle was being engaged with it. This is where my role as an intern at the New Zealand Centre came into the equation; it allowed me to consolidate my knowledge by sharing my insights with the New Zealand university academics on Visiting Fellowships at the Centre.
I also learned a lot from the Chinese professors working at the New Zealand Centre and the Kiwi professors teaching our culture and history course at PKU. I work as a photographer, and while that may seem completely unrelated to my time at PKU, I constantly draw on my experiences from that time abroad. This could be when working with a Chinese client, or just bumping into someone who has spent time in China. I now incorporate concepts and designs in my photography with more understanding of the visual language I am using, and how it will be understood by my audience.
